3 buildings:
Kennemerstraatweg 21 consists of three distinct buildings: the monumental villa on
the Kennemerstraatweg, the intermediate building with a single story, and a tertiary
building with two stories.
The monumental villa on the Kennemerstraatweg was constructed before the end of
the 19th century, with a structure as far back as the 17th century. Its current
appearance dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed in Neo-
Renaissance style. The monumental staircase is also constructed in the Neo-
Renaissance style, featuring a richly decorated wooden staircase with landings, an
equally ornate stucco ceiling, and a large stained-glass window.
From 1922 onwards, the building was used as an office for tax administration by the
government and became state property.
In the 1980s, the two additional building sections were constructed on the area
behind the villa. These buildings were designed by Tauber Architects. An opening
was made in the villa to connect it to the new buildings at the rear.
Old and New:
With the front façade on Kennemerstraatweg being a municipal monument, it posed
as one of the main challenges in realizing the 33 residential units. Careful
consideration of this was taken into account from the beginning of the design process
as to maintain this important characteristic.
Of the rear façade, the right part of the villa has been newly applied with stucco. The
former connection between villa and middle building was removed and separated,
creating a clear distinction between old and new. Stucco was also applied here,
making the modified parts of the façade subtly readable.
The existing façades of the building sections at the rear have been preserved as
much as possible and new outdoor spaces have been realized.
