On the Zandvoort Boulevard stands the renovated apartment complex Seinpostweg. New luxurious apartments were added to the ground floor and souterrain level. This low rise addition is shaped in a horizontal volume, scaled to relate to the human scale and its surroundings, acting as a transition between the Boulevard and the high rise originating from the 1960s.

Scaling levels

The structure stands on the corner of the bustling Boulevard and Seinpostweg, looking out towards the North Sea. To relate to its layered surroundings of the sea, beach, dunes, Boulevard and the human scale, layers of volumes and depth were added by creating a low rise addition with a colonnade on the ground floor. Here, new luxurious apartments are housed, including maisonettes that connect to the added souterrain beneath. This extension contains outdoor spaces, providing the residents with beach view balconies.

The new entrance forms the piece where the different volumes and levels come together, uniting their differences into a cohesive whole.

Materiality

The high rise was built in concrete and brick at the start of the 1960s. During renovations years later, the facade was clad with white plastic panels. Strong winds from the sea caused some of these panels to fall off. To ensure durability and reference to the original built form, these panels were removed and brick was brought back. Mixed brick was chosen to form a weatherproof facade that matches the sandy colors of the beach.
The horizontal low rise follows the curve of the public space. It is raised in cream-colored concrete, reflecting the coastal color palette and transforming the building from its former harsh and cold exterior into a softer, warmer one.
