Just a short walk from our office, we are working on a unique renovation: the former parish house next to the Heilig Hartkerk in Haarlem's Kleverpark neighbourhood. This beautiful monument is part of Haarlem’s religious heritage. At the end of the 19th century, an urban development plan was drawn up for the Kleverpark neighbourhood. The plan also included the construction of a tram line from Haarlem to Bloemendaal. When the neighbourhood was built, one of its most recognizable buildings was established: a new Roman Catholic church. In 1902, the Heilig Hartkerk was constructed in neo-Gothic style, designed by architect Peter Bekkers, a pupil of Pierre Cuypers. The parish house, built alongside the church, served as a community space for parishioners, where people lived, held meetings, and organized gatherings and lectures.
In collaboration with the Municipality of Haarlem, we are giving this monument a new purpose as a shelter for 20 minor refugees with residence permits.
We approach the building with care, cherishing and restoring it where necessary, so that it is preserved and given new life as a safe home for young people.
